Senior Circuitry Engineer
Job Description
The foundation of each of our products is a well-designed circuit board. Cobalt products use a variety of circuitry types: digital circuits like FPGAs, Flash memory, DDR memories, microprocessors, and clocking circuits, as well as analog video and digital video (SDI) receiver and transmitter circuits. We provide analog and digital audio interfaces on our products as well, so experience with professional audio is a plus. Occasionally, we design a product with more user interface components like touch screen LCD panels, rotary encoders, and communications interfaces (Ethernet, USB, CAN Bus, UART based interfaces, etc). You'll also manage the PCB layout process, working with and supervising our layout engineers.
As a Senior Circuitry Engineer, you’ll oversee the development and test activities of other PCB engineers on staff. Although you will be a leader, you are not just a manager--mostly here we lead by example. You will be doing a lot of direct development on the circuitry, charting new courses as we face new challenges. You’ll have a private office, and we strive to keep distractions to a minimum, so you can be free to do the brilliant designs that are needed for our world- class products.
Personal Requirements
- Self-starter - Demonstrated history of looking for problems to solve and solving them.
- Good communicator - Communicates ideas well, speaks up when he or she has a better way of doing things, gives and takes constructive criticism well.
- Accurate estimator - Ability to estimate how long development tasks will take.
- Capable leader - Demonstrated history of coaching junior engineers and helping them be useful contributors to large projects.
- A Closer - A history of bringing projects to a close, creating a shippable product, and getting the job done.
Skill Requirements
- PCB design experience – We need someone who has designed lots of PCBs in the past and knows what makes for a good design process.
- PCB debug experience – When PCB prototypes come back, it’s important to be able to debug the PCB quickly and make any needed changes. You will lead that process.
- Complex clocking / PLLs – Having experience with designs that use multiple clock domains is important. Most video systems involve some amount of synchronization. Understanding the design and optimization of PLLs is very helpful.
- Digital Video – Having worked with Digital Video, especially SMPTE standard SDI video, is helpful. Experience with Gennum or National Cable EQ, Cable Driver, SERDES, and reclocker chipsets is a big plus.
- Digital Audio – Experience working with Digital Audio circuitry is a plus as well, especially the AES3-id digital audio standard.
- Programming experience – Sometimes some software is needed to fully validate a PCB. Being able to write your own test programs in C is very useful. We also use Python for workstation tool development, including a schematic BOM to MRP system.
